SJK Kyu Grading took place yesterday - Sunday 17th July and the standard was very high. Well done to all students and to all instructors who helped make this a successful occassion.

Thank you to Chris for his email (see below)
Dear David and Lilian Sensei, Thank you for the grading today. It must have been very painful for you Sensei David, having had a tooth extraction. I know the feeling, I've had a couple of those myself. I'm very pleased to have passed today, as is Stephen. I had in fact done enough lessons to have graded in April but I didn't feel confident enough to put myself forward. I'm glad that I left it until today. I felt much more confident and the additional training and time spent practicing at home seems to have paid off. Thank you once again and please thank the other instructors whose patience and perseverance with me is much appreciated. Oss. Chris Chessum

Another great Grading result for SJK on Sunday 24th April 2005
Not only did we have the usual excellent kyu grading results but we had 3 of our more mature brown belt students successfully passing their Shodan black belts. Congratulations to : Neil Charalambous 1st Dan, John Bienek 1st Dan and Nicholas Herculis 1st Dan - All have done well in training hard to obtain their black belts and  a special mention for Nic as it wasn't that long ago that he had a serious heart operation.

Harry and Loui proud holders of the black belt

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL SJK STUDENTS ON A SUCCESSFUL GRADING

Over 70 kyu grade students graded for different coloured belts on Sunday 5th December and all successfully passed the various grades.

Following the Kyu grades with some dynamic and explosive action was the black belt grading of Harry Bradford  and Loui Loizou - both performed to the highest level and passed with flying colours

Harry aged 8 is the youngest student of SJK to pass his black belt since the school started in 1978. He is probably one of the youngest karate students in the country to have passed his black belt

Loui returned to train at SJK a couple of years ago after a 20 year lay off. With determination he has trained very hard several times a week and helped with the junior classes and thoroughly deserved to pass his black belt grading

PROUD NEW SJK BLACK BELTS - JULY 2004.

Pictured above and to the right - with Sensei David are from left to right. (front line) Anna Christofides 1st Dan,  Jemma Gumble 1st Dan,  Mark Tillson 1st Dan.  (back line) Joe Stockwell  and Ben Stockwell ( father and son both 1st Dan.)

David and Lilian Alleyn and their team of black belt instructors from Enfield based School of Japanese Karate, were proud to have helped five of their top brown belts to achieve the coveted black belt on Sunday.

More than 70 coloured belt students from the School of Japanese Karate, who earlier had successfully passed their own gradings, were treated to some exciting advanced karate techniques from the five prospective black belts who took and passed with "flying colours" the arduous black belt test.

Well done to you all!

Thanks once again to Chris Chessum for the photos and the "thank you "email for his and his son's grading.

Thanks also to Anna Christofides for her phone call expressing thanks to David and Lilian Sensei and all instructors  for their help  and support .

We have also received a letter from Joe and Ben Stockwell thanking David and Lilian Sensei and all black belts who have helped them reach Sho Dan.

We hear that Sensei Kevin (Wednesday advanced  class Instructor) received a nice bottle of wine from one of his grateful students - cheers Kevin!

--------------------------------------------------------

Well done to all who attended the Course on Sunday 21.11.04 at Chace Community School - everyone trained really hard for the three hours and we were pleased to see such a good turnout. Remember the course is equal to two lessons towards the grading .

The email below was received this morning.

Thank you Sensei, I thought your enthusiasm with the yellow belts this afternoon was inspiring.- I hope they learn to use breathing to compliment their dexterity. My son seemed to be more than happy to have spent 3 hours learning. Not bad for a 6 year old; well done to you and yours keep up the good work. Michael Dunn

The Instructors were Shihan David Alleyn 6th Dan, Sensei Sema Sanin Hampton 3rd Dan, Sensei Kevin Bird 2nd Dan and Sensei Ray Minley 2nd Dan. Thanks to them for the support on the day - How about some comments on the Instructors efforts on preparing and carrying out their lessons.

Below email from sjk student

I just wanted to take the time to officially say a big thank you to the
club, but in particular to Anna Christofides for helping me through my
first grading.  I don't think that I have ever been taught anything
with such kindness, enthusiasm, and dedication before.  Anna would
always take the time to explain everything to the class clearly, and she
would always make sure that we understood what was expected of us.  She
was also always very patient of our mistakes.

It was through her encouragement and (very) hard work that I found the
enthusiasm to pursue Karate, and thanks to her that I was able to gain
my orange belt, something, which, back in February when she took over
our beginner's class, I did not have the confidence to believe I would
be able to do.

She is a credit to SJK Karate and I hope that she continues to inspire
others the way that she inspired me!

Thanks
Alex Maisey

Dear Sensei David and Sensei Lilian,

Just to say a huge thank you for all the work you do amongst young people.  My son Stephen is over the moon at having passed his 9th kyu today and we are very proud of him too.  He really looks forward to his karate lessons on Fridays at Broomfield School.   Karate has helped him no end in boosting his confidence, improving his co-ordination and making him more physically fit.

Many thanks and gratitude to you and the other instructors who have helped during the past year.

Established in 1978, the SJK Karate Club also teaches the techniques necessary for competing in traditional competition, along with the rules of scoring. Our goal is to develop the skills necessary to compete in Kata and Kumite events at all levels proudly (for those who wish to participate) representing SJK. A world of opportunity for improved mental and physical health can be gained from a quality karate club such as ours. Karate training opens the doorway to building greater self-confidence. The benefit of self-defense is obvious, but it is only a small part of what can be gained. Karate builds stamina, strength, flexibility, and coordination. People can also learn and develop calmness, greater alertness, patience, and self-discipline.

We offer the highest quality instruction in the art of Shotokan Karate-do. . Our heritage continues to bring life and fulfillment to our karate training. Our classes are traditional, highly disciplined, challenging, and authentic! All instruction is given by qualified black belt instructors. To the greater benefit of all of our students, most classes are lead directly by the chief instructor Shihan David Alleyn 6th Dan Karate - 1st Dan Ju Jitsu.

CHINESE ORIGINS:
The origin of karate dates back more than a thousand years. When Daruma Taishi was at the Shaolin monastery in China, he taught his students physical training methods in order to build endurance and physical strength required to carry out the rigid discipline that was part of their religion. This physical training method was further developed and adapted to become what is known today as the Shaolin art of fighting.

The martial art was imported to Okinawa and blended with the indigenous fighting techniques of the islands also known as Te. The lord of ancient Okinawa and later the feudal lord of Kagoshima, on the southernmost tip of Kyushu in Japan, banned the use of weapons, thus giving rise to the development of "empty hand" fighting and self - defense techniques. This martial art, due to its Chinese origin, was called karate, written in characters with the literal meaning "Chinese hand." The modern master of this art, Gichin Funakoshi, however, chose the character for its meaning in Zen Bhuddist philosophy: "rendering oneself empty." To the master, karate was a martial art, but it was also a means of building character. Master Funakoshi wrote: "As a mirror's polished surface reflects whatever stands before it and a quiet valley carries even the smallest sounds, so must the student of karate render his mind empty of selfishness and wickedness in an effort to react appropriately toward anything he might encounter. This is the true meaning of kara or 'empty' of karate."

Funakoshi was first introduced to the Japanese public in 1922, when he was the then professor at the Okinawa Teacher's College, was invited to lecture and demonstrate at an exhibition of traditional martial arts sponsored by the Ministry of Education. His demonstration so impressed the audience that he was flooded with requests to teach in Tokyo. Instead of returning to Okinawa, Funakoshi taught karate at various universities and at the Kodokan, the mecca of Judo, until he was able to establish the Shotokan in 1936, a great landmark in the history of karate in Japan.

The Japan Karate Association was established in 1955 with Funakoshi as chief instructor. At this time, the organization had only a few members and a handful of instructors who had studied karate under the then aged master. In 1958 the Association held the first all-Japan karate championship tournament, now an annual event, helping to establish karate as a competitive sport.

As a practical means of self-defense, karate is taught in a great number of colleges and universities in their physical education programs. In Japan and elsewhere in the world, moreover, karate is gaining great popularity as a competitive sport, one which stresses mental discipline as well as physical prowess. What was originally developed in the Orient as a martial art, then, has survived and changed through the centuries to become not only a highly effective means of unarmed self-defense, but also an exciting, challenging sport.

Dojo Kun 'Dojo Kun', or training code, which not only ensures a disciplined training environment, but serves as a tool for moulding behavior, so that a true Karateka will fight with words and only employ physical violence as a last resort.

BUSHIDO:
The Samurai Code Zen was introduced into Japan in the twelfth century. Championed by Hojo Tokimune, who led the defeat of repeated Mongolian invasions, Zen became firmly established amongst the samurai warrior classes.

As the 18th century 'Ha Gakure' Book of the Samurai affirms, "The Way of the Samurai is found in death." In Zen there is neither good nor bad and neither right nor wrong. There is acceptance of every turn that life may take, and death is embraced completely. This is a philosophy of self-sacrifice both in battle and in everyday life.

Reflecting the basic nature of goodness underlying all things, the Warrior is devoted to the spiritual welfare of the world at large, vigilantly defending peace, justice and humanity.

“Although it stands to reason that a samurai should be mindful of the Way of the Samurai, it would seem that we are all negligent. Consequently, if someone were to ask, "What is the true meaning of the Way of the Samurai?" the person who would be able to answer promptly is rare. This is because it has not been established in one's mind beforehand. From this, one's unmindfulness of the Way can be known. Negligence is an extreme thing" .

Yamamoto Tsunetomo

KARATE - A WAY OF LIFE:
Nowadays it is virtually a cliche to say "Karate-do is a way of life/a lifestyle", but very few really know what they are talking about and actually explain their words. In Shotokan Karate you obtain, through a rigorous training, a knowledge about yourself, that in our hedonistic present materialistic culture, is very hard to obtain.
This knowledge gives you the tools with which you can face any critical situation in your life. You can then confront them calmly, firmly and with an unusual success. But it not only expresses itself in crisis, furthermore in any activity, the spirit of excelling and the self-knowledge attained give you better tools to achieve a better life.
